Hydration: The Key to Optimal Performance
Water is essential for life. It makes up about 60% of our body weight and is involved in almost every bodily function. When we're dehydrated, our bodies can't function at their best. This can lead to several problems, including fatigue, muscle cramps, headaches, and even heatstroke.
Hydration is essential for everyone, especially for athletes.
During exercise, we sweat a lot of water. This can lead to dehydration quickly, especially if we need to replace the lost fluids. Dehydration can significantly impact our performance, making us feel tired, sluggish, and uncoordinated.
Here are some tips for staying hydrated before, during, and after workouts:
Before your workout:
Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Aim to drink half your weight in ounces, but you may need more if you exercise vigorously or sweat a lot.
Drink 16-24 ounces of water two hours before your workout.
Drink 8 ounces of water 30 minutes before your workout.
During your workout:
Drink 8-12 ounces of water every 20-30 minutes during your workout.
Swap sports drinks for coconut water! It contains potassium and electrolytes, and it helps regulate blood pressure. Coconut water is better for your heart than any sports drink.
After your workout:
Drink 16-24 ounces of water immediately after your workout to avoid getting headaches or cramps.
Continue to drink fluids throughout the day to rehydrate your body, and make sure you stop drinking 1-2 hours before bed so you're not getting up at night to use the bathroom.
What is quality water?
Quality water is free from lead, arsenic, and chlorine contaminants. It should also be filtered to remove any sediment or debris.
How to get quality water:
Drink filtered water. Many types of water filters are available, so you can choose one that fits your needs and budget.
Additional tips for staying hydrated:
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, which are naturally high in water.
Avoid sugary drinks, cocktails, soda, and juice, which dehydrate you.
Drink water even when you're not thirsty. Staying ahead of the curve and drinking fluids before you get thirsty is essential.
